Volunteer Alexandria is holding an open house on February 13 from 8 to 9 a.m. at their new location in Old Town.

We welcome you to come by and visit us in our new space! Volunteer Alexandria and the Alexandria Chapter of the American Red Cross will be hosting an Open House on Friday, February 13 8:00-9:00AM. Come enjoy coffee and pastries, meet the staff, and learn about how we are working together to serve Alexandria.

Volunteer Alexandria (formerly the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau) is recruiting Snow Buddies.

Snow Buddies Needed! With the first snow of the season, we are need of volunteers to shovel snow for the elderly in Alexandria. If you would be willing to help a neighbor, please fill out the snow buddies application and fax it to 704-683-1793 or email it to agrant@volunteeralexandria.org. If you have questions, please call 703-836-2176.

Snow Buddies is a volunteer program administered by the City of Alexandria . It is aimed at providing snow removal, leaf raking and lawn mowing assistance to Alexandria ’s residents who: are physically unable to do so themselves, cannot afford to pay for this help; or do not have immediate neighbors, family or friends to assist them. You will be assigned a home in Alexandria where you will go in order to perform these service when they are needed. Notice for snow removal will be short and require immediate response from the volunteer

Winter is far from over and this is a great way to help out others in the community.

The Alexandria Mentoring Partnership needs to recruit lots of new mentors into the program because demand is high for mentors in our community. There are a lot of different opportunities and ways to get involved and the website has loads of information. If you want to know even more, this is your lucky day, because the program is hosting an informational session and dinner on January 27th from 6-8 p.m. at T.C. Williams.

On Saturday, November 8th the City of Alexandria is going to be conducting a Public Health emergency exercise. They need participants to learn from the exercise so that they can protect all of us in the event of a real emergency.

“The City of Alexandria and Arlington County need you to volunteer to help test our ability to deliver medications to residents during a public health emergency. Volunteering takes about 30 minutes on Saturday, November 8, 2008. Just walk into one of the five exercise sites between 9:00 a.m. and noon to pick up simulated medications for yourself, your family and any neighbors you would assist in the event of a real emergency.”
