video games and exercise at the Alexandria YMCA

Feb 8th, 2009 by rebecca

Today in the Washington Post, Lori Aratani looks at a few local initiatives to use video game technology to encourage kids to exercise in “Fitness Revolution in Motion.” The article includes several pictures from the Alexandria YMCA and discusses the Y’s $200,000 initiative to creative and interactive exercise center. I’m curious to see what the community reaction to that high price-tag will be.

YMCA benefits for active duty military families

Nov 20th, 2008 by rebecca

The Armed Services YMCA is a separate organization from the YMCA. The two have partnered for a special program that allows the families of active duty service members to use their community YMCA at free or reduced rates. Although the website states that eligible participants needed to enroll by October, the YMCA Alexandria is still accepting new members under the program.

Those eligible to participate in the new initiative include:

-All interested families of joint deployed National Guard and Reserves;
-Active Duty families assigned to newly established Joint Bases created by the Base
Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process;
-Active Duty Independent Duty station personnel (single or family members); and
-Relocated spouses and family members of deployed Active Duty personnel.

Contact the Alexandria Branch for details.
